The History Of Mother's Day + Special Discount

On Sunday 13th of May, many Australians will be calling or visiting their mother’s with flowers and presents in celebration of Mother’s Day. However, did you know, for an incredible holiday that honours the sacrifice and care mothers give, it has an interesting and chequered past you may not be aware of!

Read on to discover why mother’s day is held on the second Sunday of every May, who exactly created the holiday, and the amazing history that leads us to celebrate our mums each year.

THE HISTORY OF MOTHER’S DAY

Modern mother’s day as we know it was first started by American, Anna Jarvis, in 1905. She set the holiday for 13 May to hallmark the memorial of her own mother, a prominent religious peace activist. When asked why she pushed for mother’s day she stated that a mother was "the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world."

Anna Jarvis

At first, Anna Jarvis was mocked by the U.S. Congress who rejected the proposal, joking they would have to create a ‘Mother-In-Law Day’ as well! However, Anna persisted and, in 1914, Woodrow Wilson officially commemorated the holiday for the second Sunday of every May.

Interestingly, this is not the first version of Mother’s Day to ever exist! Communist Russia has secularly celebrated International Women’s Day since 1913. Throughout ancient history as well, Greeks and Romans have honoured ‘mother goddesses’, while in medieval Britain servants, were allowed on the fourth Sunday of Lent to travel home and spend the day with their mums, known as ‘Mothering Sunday’.

WHY DOES AUSTRALIA CELEBRATE MOTHER’S DAY?

Australia didn’t start celebrating M-day until 1924. We adopted the American holiday when a Sydney-sider, Janet Heyden, became concerned about the lonely, forgotten mothers of Newington State Hospital, who were widowed or bereft of their children due to WW1.

She successfully campaigned local schools and businesses to donate gifts to the ladies. And we’ve celebrated mother’s day with gifts and thought ever since.
